Daniel Hofstede

Biography

Daniel Hofstede is a Dutch artist whose sculptural practice navigates the space between the everyday and the enigmatic. Working with found objects and reclaimed materials, Hofstede assembles floor- and wall-based compositions that merge personal and collective narratives with formal precision. His work draws upon a logic of reuse and domestic labour, foregrounding gestures of care, attention, and the quietly handmade.

Characterised by their material ambiguity and emotional resonance, Hofstede’s works often incorporate elements such as stitched fabrics, steel, wood, or detritus—objects bearing a visible history of use, sentiment, or neglect. These materials are repurposed through intuitive yet methodical acts of combination, creating images that seem both familiar and estranged. Central to his practice is an exploration of authorship, authenticity, and the fluid borders between the functional and the symbolic.

Hofstede studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (Amsterdam), and has been active through individual practice (HFSTD), collaborations (HOFSTEDEROTH), and curatorial work (deSERVICEGARAGE). His exhibitions span major Dutch venues including Arti et Amicitiae, Kunstverein Amsterdam, W139, and P/////AKT, as well as international platforms such as Art Brussels, Alpineum Produzenten (Lucerne), and Spanien 19C (Aarhus). Recent exhibitions include Triple A at KATE art space (Amsterdam), The Reenacted Reality of Dark Oak at ALL CAPS (Rotterdam), and curatorial/design collaborations with Boris Tellegen at Saatchi Gallery (London) and Backslash Gallery (Paris).
