Nayul Kim
Nayul Kim is a South Korean artist whose practice explores the movement of images between digital and physical realms. Working at the intersection of virtual reality and traditional painting, Kim constructs her compositions by sculpting and sketching in immersive digital environments, which she then remediates into oil on canvas. Her work poses a central question: what occurs when an image shifts across mediums and realities?
Through this process-driven approach, Kim interrogates the relationship between bodily experience and sensory simulation, between materiality and immateriality. The resulting paintings embody a tension between authenticity and mediation, revealing how perception is shaped across virtual and tactile planes.
Kim completed her MA in Painting at the Frank Mohr Institute (Netherlands) in 2023 and holds a BFA from Hongik University (Seoul). Her work has been presented at Scope Miami Beach, LOOM (Berlin), and the Union Pavilion at the 15th Gwangju Biennale. She was awarded the UMCG Makers Award and nominated for the Sluijters Painting Prize. Her paintings are held in the collections of Stichting Heden (The Hague), NN Art Collection, and Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen, among others.
